I’ve always loved The Sleeping Gypsy by Henri Rousseau. Rousseau was a toll collector for the city of Paris, mostly a self-taught artist with aspirations to attend Academy though it never happened. The magical quality it has with the moon hovering over everything made it a natural to include Solstice.
I’m not familar with that painting, but I really like yours.
Henri Rousseau has been called a “primitive” artist, I guess meaning he had no formal training, but his work is in major museums and I’m very fond of it. His amateurish technique brought him a lot of criticism, but Picasso and Kandinsky admired him. His best known works are jungle scenes, inspired by frequent trips to the Paris gardens and zoo. He reportedly never left Paris. That’s imagination for you!

Time for a moonlight snooze.
Looks like that kitty is hungry. Here comes a paw to the face!
A lion in kitty clothes!
Gorgeous.
Thank you, David!
I’m not familiar with Rousseau’s work (although I know his name) but this makes me want to explore his work! I love this Masters series of yours, Mark! Brilliant!
I’ve been wanting to do this series for quite a while, just never took the time. I’m enjoying studying great artist’s work and distilling it into something I can recreate. I appreciate your nice words, Dana!
