Vintage Zombie Boy Promo Poster
on August 12, 2020
Years ago, around the time of Zombie Boy’s final comic book appearance, I created a poster to promote him at local comic book shops. As you can see, this version of the Undead Adolescent is quite a bit different from the tousle-headed comic strip character you see these days. I was heavily influenced by anime at the time and was going for a grimmer and more visceral appearance. Zombie Boy began his career in a Harvey Comics-esque style and sometime during the 90s I decided to go for a whole new look. This version appeared in one comic book, Zombie Boy #1, published by Antarctic Press in 1997. After a decade hiatus, I dusted him off and revived him in a comic strip, which is the version that is mostly known today.
So cool Mark to see the old ZB! Great to see how your style has grown into a clean masterful line 🙂
Thanks, Leroy. It was interesting to take the core of Zombie Boy that I’d been working with over the years and distilling it into a simpler, more direct design. After a couple of variations on his theme, I think the current comic strip version of America’s Favorite Undead Adolescent is my favorite. He’s a lot more fun to work with now, and along with all the other characters has much more gag potential.
