Zombie Boy #1 Page 13
Thought I’d share some of my Zombie Boy comic book work with you. Here is page 13 from Zombie Boy #1, which was published by Antarctic Press in 1997. This version of Zombie boy is quite different from the fin-headed imp in the comic strip. I took an experimental departure from his regular “cartoony” look when I created this. At the time, I was really into manga and anime, and you can see the influence in the layout and toning. I’m really proud of this book, the first of a planned three-issue comic book series which unfortunately never made it past this first issue.
In this page, there is a snag in the cruel killer Baron Samedi’s plan to rule Limbo, when the daughter of his conquered rival, Danballah, escapes to our world in search of an ancient totem which could restore the balance to the Darklands. The tale is based on actual voodoo mythology and I had a great time putting it all together.
Wow Mark! You are one versatile artist. Very impressed
Thanks, Danny, it was fun sharing some of that old work.
ZB sure looked a lot different back in those days Mark. Was Gorr in existence back then?
This was the last comic book version of ZB I did, Tony. I wanted to see how “real” I could render ZB on a comic book page. Gorr didn’t exist in the comic books, he was added to the comic strip because he was inspired by Pooj, who wasn’t in my life during my comic book days.
Amazing! I’ve always wanted to see the early ZB stuff – it’s sooo different! Have you ever thought about doing this style again either as a separate project or working on somebody else’s comic?
One day I’ll post an even earlier version that looks even more different, Drewvis. I might be open to try something like this again if its a good project and I could find the time.
Hooooooly cow this is so dope
Thank you, Jonard! I think it still holds up pretty well after all these years.
I had no idea the comic book was so different! Really great art, Mark!
This was the last interpretation of Zombie Boy I created in comic book form, Peter. The earlier versions were a bit more “cartoony” although not as cartoony as the current comic strip. I was challenging myself to create a more realistic version with this book.
