Rare George McManus Photo
on November 15, 2011
Vintage photo of George McManus, creator of the enormously successful comic strip Bringing Up Father, with a fan, circa early 1930s. This rare photo from a private collection pictures McManus presenting a drawing to an excited fan. The timeworn photo was framed along with the pen and ink sketch of Maggie and Jiggs by McManus seen below.
Why is it “rare”? Did he shun photographers like Steranko?
It’s rare as in not seen outside a private collection. Kind of cool to see him interact with a fan like the celebrity that he was at that time.
Ahhh, I gotcha brutha-man.
Or is it rare as in not cooked very much???
I don’t think that photo was cooked at all, but I meant rare as in uncommon.
That sure would have been pretty neat to have back in the day (or now, for that matter).
Whoever that fan was it was obvious meeting McManus made a huge impact on him. Look at his face. The pic was still in good condition 80 years later!
The strip was pretty big in it’s day!… I have a strip collection from 1920.
McManus was the quintessential big time cartoonist. His strip’s popularity let him live the lifestyle of the rich, famous cartoonist. Those were the days!
Very cool. Love stuff like this.
Thanks Frank. I don’t think this photo has ever been seen outside of a few people. The fan looks pretty excited to meet the man, don’t you think?
how do you always find all the awsome stuff?
all i find on the internet are video’s of cats with hats
Occupational hazard, Bob.
Geo. Macmanus had a huge influence on Herge, the author of Tintin. I have seen characters that Herge copied point blank. Bringing up Father predates Tinting by a good 20 years…
I did not know that, Leroy. Now that you mention it, Herge’s work did have that thin line look that McManus perfected. Thanks for that info!
